Protect your online passwords

Choosing your online password is a compromise between something I can remember and something that will not easily be found.  Lots of us go for the lazy solution and many of us use the same password over and over again for convenience.
Good practice would suggest a different password for each website and that we change it at least once a month. But good practice is just that and depending on how important the information that can be accessed the more important that you keep your password safe and secure. Today 8 digits are recommended, a mix of letters and numbers, not using sequences e.g. abc, 123 etc.

I have over 40 logins and this matched with a very bad memory has meant that eventually I have come to depend on a password manager service.
Splashdata (splashdata.com) themselves provide such a service. I happen to use Lastpass (lastpass.com) which has become a fixed addon button on my broswer and automatically fills in my logins when I am logged into lastpass.
Maybe its time to think about your level of security and the consequences of something as simple as having your email hacked never mind your bank account!

Yes there is a trade off – I know I provide google with a lot of data that helps them target ads pretty accurately onto my email account. It was a win win sort of thing….but today my email told me I was running out of space. WHAT! I thought, but….thats not possible with gmail…..or is it?

Yes I have reached the stage of 7.1 gigabites of space ( actively encouraged by google to so do!)  but today they tell me I am coming close to my limit.

What to do?  This is the dilemma I face,  hours upon hours of deleting emails and attachments ( when I had grown comfortable knowing I can always reach back into them – its like having my own library and great filing system)  OR …. paying  5 dollars per annum for each additional 20 gigs.

Yes you are right , I have taken the lazy solution  as 5 dollars ( if it stays at that price!) is not too much to pay for this additional space.

HOWEVER – I have another dilemma – now that I am a “paying customer”, is Google entitled to access my data “free of charge” as there now exists a paid for business relationship and I am wondering if google will allow me charge them for facilitating them with so much information which ensures their advertisers want to spend more and more money with them.?

Any actuaries out there able to calculate how much I should be charging google?

Answers on the back of a 5 dollar bill  ( or euros if you dont have dollars – but preferably German Euros!)
